Rooney is banned for Manchester United’s next two games.
Manchester
United manager Louis van Gaal has made it clear that captain Wayne
Rooney will not walk straight back into the first team when he returns
from suspension, Goal.com.
The 28-year-old was sent off against West Ham on September 27th and
will miss United’s games against West Bromwich Albion and Chelsea as he
completes his ban.
He
will be available for the match against fierce rivals Manchester City
but van Gaal insists Rooney will have to train well to have a chance of
playing against the Premier League champions.
“Nobody is walking back in my team, believe me. You have to earn it on the training ground,” he told reporters.
“But
every player here already knows that. I have always said that just
because players have the best name, it doesn’t mean that they are the
best for the team.
“I am always looking for a constant level of performance – from the team and from individual players.”
The
Red Devils have had plenty of injury problems so far this season, with
several youth teams players being drafted in to cover long term
absentees like Phil Jones and Michael Carrick.
Despite their
inexperience, Van Gaal thinks youngsters like Tyler Blackett and Patrick
McNair have acquitted themselves well when they have covered for their
colleagues.
“Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick and Phil Jones are
great football players but, believe me, sometimes the other players are
doing better,” he added.
“It is not only the name. I have seen,
for example, a player like McNair. He was outstanding in the first match
and you have seen the reaction of the fans to that.”
